چکیده

Cytochalasin B (37 fig per ml) reduces the rate of food vacuole formation, i.e. the rate of phagocytosis, in Tetrahymena pyriformis. Cytochalasin B in this concentration suppresses multiplication rates in a nutrient medium consisting of 2 % proteose peptone, but multiplication is unaffected if this medium is supplemented with glucose and high concentrations of nucleosides. Thus nutrients in high concentrations circumvent the necessity for phagocytosis in Tetrahymena.

Fine structure and RNA synthesis of Tetrahymena during cytochalasin B inhibition of phagocytosis.

Cytochalasin B inhibits the formation of normal-sized food vacuoles in Tetrahymena but the cells do not starve. Treated cells differ from starved cells in that they retain a high rate of incorporation of tritiated uridine. Large numbers of smaller vacuoles, about 1 micrometer in diameter, are formed, presumably by pinocytic activity of the cytopharyngeal membrane. This effect may perhaps be due...

In the polymorphic ciliate Tetrahymena vorax, the non-selective phagocytosis seen in microstomes changes to a highly selective process in macrostomes.

Ciliates use phagocytosis to acquire edible particles. The polymorphic ciliate Tetrahymena vorax appears in two forms ('microstomes' and 'macrostomes'). Transformation of microstomes into macrostomes takes place in the presence of the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila and enables the macrostome to phagocytose the latter species. The non-specific, constitutive phagocytosis in microstomes thereby c...

Phagocytosis by human blood leukocytes measured by the uptake of 131I-labeled human serum albumin: inhibitory and stimulatory effects of cytochalasin B.

In the study of phagocytosis, the experimental systems used must be able to distinguish among various aspects of the phagocytic process, such as chemotaxis, adherence of the ingestate, engulfment, fusion of phagosome and lysosome, metabolic perturbations, and extracellular release of various substances. Chang introduced a method for measuring the degree of ingestion of starch particles by rabbi...

Inhibition of Phagocytosis and Plasma Membrane Mobility of the Cultivated Macrophage by Cytochalasin B

Functional and morphologic effects of cytochalasin B on the cultivated macrophage were examined to determine the basis for plasma membrane movements of the type required for endocytosis and/or spreading on a substratum. Inhibition of phagocytosis and changes in cell shape by cytochalasin B exhibited nearly identical dose-response curves requiring 2-5 x 10(-6) M and 1-2 x 10(-5) M cytochalasin B...

Nutrient uptake of peanut genotypes under different water regimes

Drought is a serious environmental stress limiting growth and productivity in peanut and other crops. Nutrient uptake of peanut is reduced under drought condition, which reduces yield. The objectives of this study were to investigate nutrient uptake of peanut genotypes in response to drought and to estimate the relationship between nutrient uptake and peanut yield under different water regi...
